Ask the Fact Monster

The Question:

Where are safe places to go during a tornado? My mom says the southeast corner of the basement. But what about people with no basement?

The Answer:

The safest place to go is the basement. The bit about the southeast corner being the safest one is a myth.

But if you have no basement you should go to an inner hallway or a smaller inner room. Rooms or areas without windows, such as a bathroom or closet, are best. For more information, check out our tornado feature, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's tornado page.
