Ask the Fact Monster

The Question:

How many civilians died as a direct or indirect result of the fighting during the American Civil War?

The Answer:

As far as we know, there aren't any authoritative figures for civilian casualties in the war. We do, however, have figures for U.S. Casualties in the Major Wars, the Civil War included, which covers deaths among soldiers on both sides. We hope this helps.
