Best Known as: Rabbi and leader of an Orthodox yeshiva in Brooklyn

A Rabbi and Talmudic scholar who led a major Orthodox yeshiva in Brooklyn for more than 50 years. Rabbi Berenbaum was born in Poland and studied yeshiva in Mir before World War II. He fled Eastern Europe during World War II to Shanghai and eventually emigrated to the United States. With only 1,200 members the Mir Yeshiva is devoted to the study of the Torah and shuns all music, song, and dance. There is another branch with 4,000 students in Jerusalem. They believe that secular learning is only useful to make a living.
