Hess, Dame Myra

Hess, Dame Myra, 18901965, English pianist, studied at the Royal Academy of Music. She made her London debut in 1907 and first appeared in the United States in 1922. Her playing was acclaimed for both virtuosity and poetic sensitivity. In 1939, and during World War II, Hess organized a series of lunch-time concerts in the National Gallery, London. In 1941 she was made Dame of the British Empire.
