beat Martina Hingis for 1999 U.S. Open championship to become the first African-American woman to win a Grand Slam title since Althea Gibson in 1958; won Wimbledon, the French Open and U.S. Open in 2002 and Australian and Wimbledon in 2003, defeating sister Venus in the final of each; has won career doubles grand slam with Venus; won 2005 Australian Open.
