Brandão, Raul

Brandão, Raul, 18671930, Portuguese novelist. His major theme was the tragic lives of poor people, and he often depicted a nightmare world of suffering ruled by inexplicable forces. His major works of fiction include the short-story collection Impressions and Landscapes (1890) and the novels The Poor (1906) and Reduced to Begging (1931).
