Often typecast as a psychotic, he has appeared in numerous movies since the 1960s, including Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Support Your Local Sheriff (1969), Silent Running (1971), Coming Home (1977), for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and All the Pretty Horses (2000). Formerly married to actress Diane Ladd, he is the father of actress .
