Cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons are the same kind of tropical storm but are called by different names in different areas of the world. A tropical cyclone is the general term for violent circular winds with torrential rains that originate in the tropics. When they occur in the Atlantic Ocean, they are called hurricanes. In the Indian Ocean, they are called cyclones. In the Pacific Ocean, they are called typhoons.
