Tetracycline—Conover's invention of tetracycline in 1952 was the first creation of an antibiotic made by chemically modifying a naturally-produced drug. Tetracycline quickly became the most prescribed broad spectrum antibiotic in the U.S. 40 years later tetracycline is still being used to combat such serious infections as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease.
