Frederick G. Cottrell

Born: 1877
Birthplace: Oakland, Calif.

Electrostatic precipitator—Cottrell's invention used high voltage electricity to remove from 90 to 98% of the ash, dust, and acid which industrial smokestacks spewed into the air. Besides eliminating this particulate pollution, this process also allowed some of the minerals and chemicals to be re-used. (1992)

Died: 1948
